Does an air conditioner really weigh 3 tons?

Just like a “light year” is a measurement of distance (not time), a “ton” in this industry is a measurement of energy needed, rather than weight. A ton in this context is the amount of energy needed to melt a ton of ice in a 24-hour period.

What does HVAC stand for?

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning, a short cut description of the comfort industry.

What is SEER?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, a measure of an air conditioner’s efficiency over the entire cooling season.  A higher SEER denotes higher efficiency.  The current minimum is 13, which was considered “high efficiency” a few years ago.

What is Bels?

A measure of sound used for rating air conditioners.  10 decibels = 1 bel.  Fewer bels means quieter operation.  The scale is logarithmic like the Richter Scale, so an increase of 0.3 bels doubles the sound.

What is a Load Calculation?

A calculation process for determining the amount of heating and air conditioning required to heat or cool a house.  Most load calculations are based on “Manual J” from the Air Conditioning Contractors of America.

What is ARHI?

Air-conditioning Heating & Refrigeration Institute, an association of equipment manufacturers that publishes industry rating standards.

What is a Condensing Unit?

Air conditioning equipment that typically sits outside a house, containing a condenser coil and compressor.  The compressor raises the pressure of refrigerant vapor and the condenser coil converts the refrigerant vapor to liquid.

What is a Metering Device?

An expansion valve or orifice that meters liquid refrigerant into an evaporator coil.

What is an Evaporator?

The indoor coil of an air conditioner where liquid refrigerant evaporates, drawing heat from the surrounding air, “cooling” the air.  In a “packaged” system, all components are located in a single, outside unit.

What is a Blower?

A central fan that pushes heated air from a furnace down the duct system or air across an air conditioner’s evaporator coil and down the duct system.

What is a Duct System?

Enclosed conduit for distributing air through a house.

What is a Heat Pump?

An air conditioner with a “reversing valve” that allows it to operate in reverse, pumping heat from a house to the outside.

What’s your hourly rate?

We stopped charging by the hour because our customers wanted to know the price up front.  They didn’t like open ended pricing. We don’t charge by the hour anymore.  We give you a firm quote up front, before any work begins.  These quotes are based on national standard repair data.  If the repair takes longer than expected, we’ll stand by the quote.  You wont pay more.

Why cant I get a free estimate?

We do give free estimates.  Bring your broken appliance to us and we do not charge for an estimate.  We also provide free estimates for new AC equipment.

How much is a service call?

What is the most common appliance repair problem?

Believe it or not we find a lot of appliances unplugged.

Should I repair or replace my existing appliance?

If you are comparing having your existing machine repaired or replacing it with a machine that is comparable in price with what you paid for your machine 10 or so years ago, you will not be making a valid comparison. The equipment is neither similar in quality nor durability for the same price. If you were to merely replace your existing household appliance with one that costs about what you paid a decade ago, you’ll be repairing or junking the new machine every three to four years. You’ll either have to pay more up front for a new, high-quality machine that will give you another 10 years of trouble-free operation or you pay less up front for a low-end machine and then pay-as-you-go for repairs.

Is repairing or servicing an old appliance really a good investment?

When asking “How much is a new one?,” you need to consider both the quality of appliance you can afford as a replacement and the option of having your existing appliance properly repaired by a competent professional. SoBellas can diagnose and evaluate your appliance to determine if it’s in your best interest to repair or replace it and make a recommendation accordingly. Also, another cost associated with buying a new appliance is the “aggra-dollars.” That is, the aggravation and time spent that goes along with shopping for a new appliance, having it delivered, getting it installed and disposing of your old one. If you’ve experienced this joy recently, you’ll realize that the aggra-dollar factor can be a very significant cost.

I have an old refrigerator/freezer that doesn’t work anymore, and I need to get rid of it. What can I do?

The best option is to take it to your local landfill. However, the law does require that you have the refrigerant evacuated first. Your local appliance repair company should be able to do that for you.

Why would my washer be using cool water during the warm cycle?

Your washer is actually combining hot water and cold water to create the warm water and during certain times of the year cold water gets colder. So, during the colder months, you can expect your warm cycle to run cooler. You might also want to check to see if there is anything blocking the hot water coming into your machine.

Why do I have suds left over in my washer after I am done washing a load of clothes? Do I need my washer repaired?

It is very possible that you are using more detergent than is necessary for the load size you are washing. Double check the detergent instructions to ensure you are using the correct amount.

What makes my oven smell so bad when it is cleaning itself?

The smell is caused by the grease and food that your oven is burning off. When possible, it is a good idea to create additional ventilation in the kitchen when cleaning your oven, perhaps by opening windows and/or doors.

What is the average amount of time it takes for a load of clothes to dry?

On average, a large load of clothes should only take around 45 minutes to dry completely. If you are noticing that your clothes are averaging more than 1 hour to dry, you might want to have your dryer vent system checked.

Why does my washer seem to frequently go off balance?

After checking to make sure the washer is level, sorting your clothes may be the issue. Sometimes sorting the clothes not only by color but also by the wet weight will eliminate most off balance conditions. If the washer is level and all four feet are setting on the floor, the issue could be a loading or sorting problem. If you sort your clothes by wet weight, it could be that your floor may be weak.

How do I get rid of the moldy or mildew smell coming from my washer?

Why is my refrigerator running longer and the temperatures in the refrigerator are warming up?

Why is my refrigerator leaking water on the bottom of the refrigerator?

On some top mount freezer refrigerators, the problem can typically be a plugged defrost drain funnel or defrost tube. Some models allow access to the defrost drain area where the funnel can be removed and cleaned.

The sides of my refrigerator or freezer are hot to the touch. Why does that happen?

Some model refrigerators have part of the condenser coils foamed into the walls of the cabinet. If the refrigerator or freezer has a forced air condenser under the unit and the coils are not cleaned, the sides of the refrigerator will be warm. Also, if the ambient temperature of the unit is warmer than normal this could cause the side walls of the unit to be warmer than normal

Why is my dishwasher leaving spots my dishes?

Most brands of dishwasher have a wetting agent dispenser that must be filled periodically. The wetting agent prevents spotting on dishes. If you have hard water, you might try changing detergents with anti-spotting additives.

The temperature in my oven temp is off. Is there a way to calibrate the temperature?

Some of the brands of ranges/ovens/stove have instructions on how to calibrate the temperature (Refer to the manufacturer’s Owner’s Manual).
